Preventative Dental Care for Kids

Once a child acquires their first tooth, preventative dental care can commence. It’s good to start preventative care early to identify dental problems before they worsen and end up costing even more. There are several services, such as guidance on brushing and flossing, fluoride application, routine X-rays, referrals to orthodontists or dental specialists, regular teeth cleanings, sealants, mouth guards, and merely identifying possible health issues.

As their name infers, pediatric dentists focus on dental care for children. A lot of kids will begin their dental care journey as soon as their first tooth pops up. Frequently, pediatric dentists will see children throughout their childhood and teen years. Pediatric dentists give both preventative dentistry and special care, depending on the situation. These specialized procedures can be anything from extractions, fillings, and even oral surgery.

Dental Care for Kids with Special Needs

For children with developmental disabilities, behavioral problems, or physical limitations, it’s critical to find a dentist that will accommodate each child’s situation. Kids with anxiety disorders, down syndrome, or cerebral palsy-- could potentially need additional support from their dentist.

Finding the perfect dentist for your child means you will have to compare your child’s needs to the dentist’s experience. Call the dentist’s office to discover if they are knowledgeable about your child’s condition and how it can affect your child’s oral health. Have a conversation about specialized help your child might need, and find out if the dentist can supply that help.

During your call to the dentist it’s also good to find out if the dentist has the following qualifications and special support:

Do they offer pre-appointments?

This will give your child the chance to see the dentist’s exam room and the equipment. It will allow your child to become comfortable with the dentist.

How accessible are they?

For kids in wheelchairs, it’s essential that they can get inside the building.

How experienced are they?

If they’ve worked with children with disabilities before, they may have developed ways to assist kids with special needs.

Have they had specialized training?

The majority of pediatric dentists will have special training to deal with kids with special needs.
