What Happens if Someone Doesn’t Change Their Toothbrush Often Enough

Toothbrushes don’t last forever. However, it can be difficult to figure out when one is coming to the end of its lifespan. Many factors can impact their effectiveness and warrant their timely replacement. If you postpone changing a toothbrush when necessary, there can be many adverse dental health effects.

How often should toothbrushes be replaced?

According to many dentists, toothbrushes should be changed every three months. Over time, they experience normal deterioration and lose their potency when dealing with plaque on gums and teeth.

Why should toothbrushes be replaced?

Several studies have revealed that bristles lose their effectiveness and break down after about three months. Consequently, they can’t remove all the harmful substances in people’s mouths and on their teeth as well as they should.

Another important reason to change toothbrushes often is that germs can accumulate in the bristles. Getting a new brush is crucial, especially after the user of the toothbrush has been ill. It’s an easy way to stave off potential re-infection.

Bacteria and fungus can also grow in toothbrushes if they’re not maintained properly. Therefore, don’t forget to rinse and dry toothbrushes thoroughly after each use to remove the gunk that attracts bacteria. Avoid keeping them in moist environments, too, since those conditions promote the growth of mildew and germs.

Knowing that such harmful microorganisms can build up on toothbrushes should be enough for you to start changing them more often. However, there are many other risks involved with inconsistent replacement as well. One of them is the potential damage to the gums due to plaque, primarily gingivitis, caused by the lack of effectiveness of the worn toothbrush. Untreated, gingivitis can lead to infection and loose teeth that may have to be removed.

Overused toothbrushes can become home to even nastier developments. They can start growing mold or even catch unwanted airborne matter if stored close to flushing toilets.

How to know when to replace a toothbrush

If you can’t remember when you last purchased a new toothbrush, the current toothbrush is probably due for a replacement. Pay close attention to its condition after each use. In particular, focus on the bristles. In normal circumstances, they are soft yet resilient and springy. Once they can’t bounce back to the original shape, they can no longer perform their job appropriately.

Cleanliness is another important factor. If the toothbrush hasn’t been rinsed properly, residue can accumulate over the handle or at the base of the bristles. In turn, the gunk traps bacteria, which can lead to disease. Thus, if the toothbrush isn’t looking fresh, get a new one.

Finally, check for any dark spots on the toothbrush. They are a clear indicator of mold, meaning it’s time to throw it out immediately.

Keep it clean

Having good oral hygiene is impossible without an adequate toothbrush. So, be sure to replace it when it looks worn out or dirty.

Additionally, don’t forget to schedule regular visits to your local dentist. They can provide even more valuable tips on proper dental hygiene and detect any problems in the mouth before they turn into a nuisance.
